Speaker Bio
Lee and Dennis Horton are more than just brothers; they embody resilience and transformation. Wrongfully convicted and sentenced to life without parole for a crime they did not commit, they endured 28 years in prison. Instead of succumbing to despair, they emerged as inspiring leaders and advocates.
Throughout their incarceration, Lee and Dennis dedicated themselves to education and personal growth. They seized every opportunity to learn, ultimately becoming teachers, facilitators, and innovators of programs that enhanced the prison environment. As Certified Peer Support Specialists, Yoga Instructors, and Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP) Facilitators, they provided essential support to thousands of fellow inmates, helping them navigate mental health challenges and legal issues.
Their journey is marked by significant achievements. They transitioned from students to teachers, creating impactful programs and events that positively influenced the prison population. The Horton brothers became role models and motivational speakers, writing, producing, and directing annual plays and films that fostered creativity and camaraderie among inmates.
On February 12, 2021, their relentless pursuit of justice culminated in a landmark victory with their release, following the filing of the first-ever Actual Innocence application for clemency. Since then, they have leveraged the skills they developed during their time in prison to advocate for social change, playing a pivotal role in John Fetterman's U.S. Senate campaign and shaping political discourse and community engagement.
Now Advanced Level WRAP Facilitators, Lee and Dennis have trained diverse groups across Pennsylvania and the nation, from Department of Corrections employees to social workers and at-risk youth in mental health recovery strategies. Their expertise has earned them an appearance on the renowned National Alliance for Mental Illness (NAMI), ask the expert series featuring a discussion on "The Future of WRAP," solidifying their status as leaders in the field.
The Horton brothers have further contributed as program facilitators with Shining Light, advised political campaigns, conducted trauma training at the PA DOC training academy, and led WRAP trainings on Native American reservations and at Fort Harrison military base in Montana. They have also collaborated with the Office of Health and Mental Hygiene in New York City and other notable agencies and organizations. Their commitment to mental health advocacy is exemplified by their involvement with the PA Governor's Heal PA Committee and the Pennsylvania Reentry Committee (PARC).
Currently, they serve as Program Development Coordinators and Lead Advanced Level WRAP Facilitators for the nonprofit Step by Step, Inc., continuing to make a profound impact in their community and beyond.
